FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE CPI awarded $2 million State Grant for Construction of Transportation Training CenterThe Centre County/Central Pennsylvania Institute (CPI) of Science and Technology has been awarded a $2 million state grant to begin Phase 2 construction of its Transportation Training Center, an integral component of workforce training in the area, according to Senator Jake Corman (R-34). Corman worked with CPI to obtain the grant to build the state-of-the art facility, which will provide training and development for workers in high-demand fields, including the emerging natural gas industry. The total cost of the project is estimated at $10.5 million. "This is a shovel ready project that will help to bring new jobs and opportunities to workers in this area," Corman said. "The Marcellus Shale industry needs highly trained workers and offers high-paying jobs – so this is a great way to promote workforce development." The training center will be built adjacent to CPI's existing six-acre Heavy Equipment Operations Training Ground. It will include a 35,000 square-foot training building, a 23,000 square-foot paved diesel yard and a 12,000 square-foot paved heavy equipment yard. The transportation center will house four primary programs: Diesel Equipment Maintenance/Repair Technology, Heavy Equipment Operator Technology, Commercial Driver's License (CDL) Training and Passenger Bus Operator Training. To address the growing demand for public safety training related to the Marcellus Share Industry, the training center will also provide much needed classroom space to support Centre County's Public Safety Training Center. The project is expected to create 31 new permanent jobs and 14 part-time jobs within one year.
